Google Pixel supports USB-C video output (DisplayPort Alt Mode) on Pixel 8, 8a, 8 Pro, and all Pixel 9 models — but not on Pixel 6 or Pixel 7 series.
- You have a Pixel 8, 8a, 8 Pro, 9, 9 Pro, or 9a
- Your Pixel has the latest software installed
- You use a USB-C adapter or cable that supports DisplayPort Alt Mode
- You have a Pixel 6 or Pixel 7 series phone
- Your adapter or cable does not support DP Alt Mode
- Software update enabling the feature has not been installed

Which Pixel Models Support Video Output?
Google added DisplayPort Alt Mode support starting with the Pixel 8 generation. Pixel 9 models ship with it enabled out of the box. Pixel 8 and 8 Pro received the feature via the June 2024 Feature Drop software update. Pixel 6 and 7 series lack the hardware or software enablement needed, so no update will add video output to those phones.
| Model | Works? | How Enabled | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pixel 9 / 9 Pro / 9a | Yes | Out of the box | Mirror only, no desktop mode |
| Pixel 8 / 8a / 8 Pro | Yes | June 2024 update or later | Mirror only, no desktop mode |
| Pixel 7 / 7 Pro / 7a | No | Not supported | No hardware enablement |
| Pixel 6 / 6 Pro / 6a | No | Not supported | No hardware enablement |
What Cable or Adapter Do You Need?
You need a USB-C cable or adapter that explicitly supports DisplayPort Alt Mode. A standard USB-C charging cable will not carry video. Look for one of these options:
- USB-C to HDMI adapter (DP Alt Mode rated)
- USB-C to DisplayPort cable
- USB-C hub with HDMI or DisplayPort output
- USB-C monitor with a direct USB-C to USB-C cable

How to Use It Once Connected
Plug a compatible adapter into your Pixel 8 or later. The phone will show a prompt asking “Mirror to external display?” — tap it to start mirroring. The screen content is duplicated on the external monitor or TV. At this time, Google does not offer a desktop mode, so you see an exact copy of your phone screen rather than an expanded workspace. Some apps such as Google Photos may not adjust aspect ratio correctly on the external display.
Bottom line: Google Pixel USB-C video output works reliably on Pixel 8 series and newer with the right DP Alt Mode adapter, but Pixel 6 and 7 owners are out of luck — no workaround exists for those models. Make sure your software is up to date and your adapter is DP Alt Mode rated before buying.
