MagSafe is Apple’s magnetic wireless charging and accessory system that uses a ring of magnets to align an iPhone 12 or later with a charger or accessory, delivering up to 15W of power.
- You have an iPhone 12 or later (or compatible AirPods)
- You use a MagSafe-certified charger or accessory
- Your case is thin and MagSafe-compatible
- Your iPhone is an 11 or older (no built-in magnets)
- You use a thick or non-magnetic case
- Your accessory is uncertified or misaligned

What MagSafe Actually Is
MagSafe is Apple’s proprietary magnetic wireless charging and accessory platform, introduced in 2020 alongside the iPhone 12 lineup. It embeds a ring of magnets around a Qi-compatible charging coil inside the phone. Those magnets snap the device into perfect alignment with a MagSafe charger or attachment automatically — no fiddling required.
It is not the same as the older MagSafe connector used on MacBooks. That was a physical magnetic power plug. The current MagSafe for iPhone is entirely wireless.
How the Charging Works
Because the magnets force exact coil-to-coil alignment, MagSafe can transfer power at up to 15W — double the 7.5W Apple allows over standard Qi. The tight magnetic connection maintains that alignment throughout the charge, so efficiency stays high.
Standard Qi chargers still work with MagSafe iPhones, but they top out at 7.5W because there is no guaranteed alignment. Only a certified MagSafe charger unlocks the full 15W speed. What Devices Support MagSafe
- iPhone 12, 12 Mini, 12 Pro, 12 Pro Max and all later iPhone models
- Select AirPods with MagSafe charging cases
- Pre-iPhone 12 models do not have the internal magnet ring and will not attach or charge at 15W

MagSafe Beyond Charging
The magnet ring does more than align a charger. It lets accessories snap securely onto the back of the phone — wallets, card holders, stands, grips, and car mounts all use the same system. Manufacturers building MagSafe-certified accessories meet Apple’s alignment and hold-strength standards, so the attachment stays firm even when you tip or move the phone.

Bottom line: MagSafe works by snapping magnets into alignment so wireless charging hits 15W and accessories hold firmly — but it requires an iPhone 12 or later, a certified charger or accessory, and a thin MagSafe-compatible case to deliver the full experience.
