Your soundbar is most likely not working through HDMI because it is plugged into the wrong port, HDMI-CEC is turned off on your TV, or the cable is loose or faulty.
- HDMI cable is in the TV’s ARC or eARC port and the soundbar’s matching ARC/eARC input
- HDMI-CEC is enabled on the TV (Anynet+, Bravia Sync, etc.)
- TV audio output is set to the soundbar or External Speaker
- Soundbar source is set to HDMI/ARC mode
- Cable is plugged into a standard HDMI port instead of the ARC port
- HDMI-CEC is disabled on the TV or soundbar
- The HDMI cable is loose, damaged, or too old
- TV audio output is still set to internal speakers

Check the Port First
The single most common mistake is using the wrong HDMI port. Your TV has one dedicated HDMI ARC or HDMI eARC port — it is usually labelled and often port 1 or 2. The soundbar also needs to be connected to its own ARC-capable input. Using any other port means audio return traffic simply has no path.
Enable HDMI-CEC on Your TV
ARC only works when HDMI-CEC is active. Every brand hides this setting under a different name:
- Samsung — Anynet+
- Sony — Bravia Sync
- LG — SimpLink
- Hisense / TCL — HDMI CEC
Go into your TV’s settings menu, find the CEC option, and make sure it is turned on. Do the same on the soundbar if it has a menu. Sony’s official ARC troubleshooting guide walks through this step-by-step for Bravia TVs and is a useful reference regardless of your brand.
Set the Correct Audio Output
Even with CEC on, your TV may still send audio to its built-in speakers by default. Go to Settings → Sound → Audio Output and choose the soundbar, ARC, or External Speaker option. On the soundbar side, switch the input source to HDMI/ARC rather than optical or Bluetooth.
Quick Fix Checklist
| Problem | Works? | Fix | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wrong HDMI port | No | Move cable to ARC port | Check label on TV |
| CEC disabled | No | Enable in TV settings | Name varies by brand |
| Bad cable | No | Replace with HDMI 2.0+ | Old cables drop ARC signal |
| Wrong audio output | No | Set TV output to soundbar | Settings → Sound |
| All correct, still no sound | Maybe | Power cycle both devices | Unplug for 5 minutes |
Power Cycle and Cable Swap
If settings look correct, unplug both the TV and soundbar from the wall, disconnect the HDMI cable, wait five minutes, then reconnect and power on. This clears handshake errors that can lock ARC negotiation. If that fails, swap in a different HDMI cable — older cables and cheap cables frequently drop the ARC data channel without obvious signs of damage. If your setup uses a USB-C source, check why USB-C to HDMI stops working for related signal issues. For general adapter compatibility, see whether USB-C can connect to HDMI.
Bottom line: Most soundbar HDMI problems come down to three things — wrong port, CEC off, or a bad cable. Start with the ARC port label, turn on CEC in your TV menu, confirm the audio output setting, then swap the cable if needed. Those four steps resolve the vast majority of cases without a factory reset or service call.
